I had no idea how this would go over with 11th graders who weren’t even sure really who Ben Franklin was, and many of whom read on an elementary level.

THEY LIKED IT. THEY REALLY LIKED IT. Well, some of them liked it, and others were falling asleep because it was ten thousand degrees today and I have no A/C. But as one kid was handing in his work on the way out, he mumbled, “Cool lesson.” HA! They are so smart. I love them.

The Key to Dreams, René Magritte(via nevver)

The Key to Dreams, René Magritte
(via nevver)

Florence and the Machine/ Postcards From Italy (Beirut...

Florence and the Machine/ Postcards From Italy (Beirut cover)
(via nightmarebrunette)

I just made a to-do list that has 20 items on it. I just counted. 20! I would post a picture of the to-do list, but I can’t find the cord to my camera, because I’m not unpacked yet. So, I guess 21. Unpacking all of my belongings would be 21 on that list.

I have four more cards in my wallet this week than I did last week: My Johns Hopkins ID, my new bank card, my new credit card, and my BCPS teacher ID. I’m basically, all of a sudden, a totally different person.

Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite-sex couples are superior to same-sex couples. Because California has no interest in discriminating against gay men and lesbians, and because Proposition 8 prevents California from fulfilling its constitutional obligation to provide marriages on an equal basis, the court concludes that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional.”

-
The court concludes that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional” is a beautiful phrase.

Yesterday I read about a genetic disorder: the afflicted are driven to hurt themselves & those they love. It is, by all evidence, extremely rare—a single, inexplicable glitch in three billion bits of code. Case studies include men who thrust their hands into their mouths & bite off their own fingers. Some bite off their lips. They beg to be restrained. There will always be those who insist everything is getting better, even when we can’t discern it.

I had an amazing last week in Washington state, visiting my grandma, spending time with my mom, and sleeping in and hiking a lot and eating a ton of fish. There’s plenty of space in between, or beyond the bounds, or all along and across the plane or sphere or whatever of gender, and it is entirely okay to say, “I do not like being a girl, and so I shall be a boy.” But it must also be okay to say, “I do not like being a girl, so I shall set about changing what it means to be a girl,” and yes, okay to say, “I do not like being a girl, and so I shan’t.””

-
S.
